Man, do I miss the Lower East Side

On mornings like this, when I would wake up on Orchard Street with the Tenement Museum's renovation crew blasting right outside the window, I would just call in sick.

And then spend the rest of the day indulging in more gin or pheromones. And cartoons and take-out. With an occasional hop over to Babeland if we needed to replenish other supplies.

Of course, back then I still smoked, so some Nat Shermans would have been nice as well.

Journal Square in Jersey City is the closest the rest of us are ever gonna live to the Lower East Side, you are lucky to have lived in Manhattan at all. Future generations will never have that chance with rents going up and up.

I didn't say I lived on the LES, I said that on mornings such as DC described, I would often wake up there.

I *did* live in Manhattan for a while, and I'm not sure I would call the experience "lucky." I was so miserable there that I wanted to leave New York altogether. Instead, I tried Brooklyn and discovered the Promised Land. Only wish I'd come here sooner.

For all I care, Manhattan can keep getting more and more expensive and exclusive and cut off from the rest of the world. My only real concern is that Manhattan will become like Brooklyn Heights -- once everyone is priced out of there, they'll discover that the alternatives are actually better, and then no one will want to live there anymore, and then Manhattan will be the only affordable place to live. I fear for my precious Brooklyn, which has already gotten too popular and expensive.
